Why Small Groups Matter for Spiritual Health and Knowing Jesus
I want to say something that might bother (or scare!) you a little.
Unpopular opinion: your intimacy with God is directly tied to your intimacy and affection for other people.
Small groups are vital because of that.
Jesus says the two greatest commands to love God and love people are "just like" each other (Matthew 22:37–39). John says it as directly as possible — you cannot even know God without deep affection for people (1 John 4:8).
That means the path to knowing God runs straight through other people.
And yes, that’s difficult. People are messy, complex, and sometimes painful. But this is where we find Jesus (1 John 4:20).
Why Small Groups Matter So Much For Christians
Here are three things small groups—and the relationships formed in them—do that are absolutely crucial if you want spiritual health as a Christian.
They break the illusion that we don’t need grace.
Left alone, we quietly start believing we’re doing fine. Relationships expose that illusion quickly. When you walk closely with others, you are reminded again and again that you are utterly dependent on the grace of Jesus—and so is everyone else.
They keep us watching for the light.
Pain has a way of turning our hearts toward cynicism, resentment, and resignation. Our world is bitter and angry right now. Scripture says we stay awake to hope by encouraging one another (1 Thessalonians 5:4–11). Community keeps us from organizing our lives around our wounds and instead helps us keep looking toward the future through hope and love.
The only real way to fight sin in your life is through relationship.
Sin is the breaking of relationship. Which means resisting sin is not mainly about trying harder—it is about repairing what sin destroys. That happens when our lives are brought into the light with others. Sin grows in isolation. Healing happens when honesty, confession, and prayer take place in the presence of people who refuse to shame or abandon you.
Small Groups at Restore Houston
Restore Houston Church offers small groups for people across Houston—from the Heights, Garden Oaks, and Oak Forest to Spring Branch, Bellaire, Meyerland, and Cypress—who want to grow in their relationship with Jesus.
Some groups gather around a meal and conversation. Others discuss the weekly sermon and dive deeper into the Scriptures together. All of them are places where people can be known, encouraged, and supported as they follow Jesus.
If you want deeper and richer spiritual health, this is where you find it.

As a pastor, I say this with every ounce of conviction I have: the most powerful experience a human being can have is when someone sees all of you.
And stays.
